HOW US FAILED TO INTERCEPT MUTTALAB PDF
Written by Ojo Sonaike, Abuja
Immediately the news of Muttalab’s bombing attempt broke, segments of the Press quickly vented their spleen on Nigerian security agencies blaming them for perceived failure. However, as much as we remain aware of our domestic security problems, the current incident is clearly the failure of foreign security agencies. This much the US government has admitted to.

The BBC had just reported US President Barack Obama as blaming American systemic failure for the ability of Abdulmuttalab to breach security to that extent. Also the CBS reportedly revealed that the US failed to flag Muttalab, not just once but twice. The first instance was on November 19, 2009 when the father reported his son to the US embassy. The second instance was the day after when the information was relayed to officials in Washington. From all indications, it appeared that the US failed or refused to share such information with their UK allies or worse still the UK failed to share their information with the US having refused Abdulmuttalab Visa on two occasions. It gets even worse – US authorities allowed Muttalab’s Visa to remain valid. What really went wrong?

and here is Al Qaeda has to say as reported on the net: … he managed to penetrate all devices and modern advanced technology and security checkpoints in international airports bravely without fear of death relying on God and defying the large myth of American and international intelligence, and exposing how fragile they are, bringing their nose to the ground, and making them regret all what they spent on security technology

So let us heap the blames where they should go. We have become so brainwashed that we tend to call a dog a bad name in order to kill it. Our security agencies cannot equate with their western counterpart – agreed. They have numerous inadequacies – agreed. Current airport security throughout the country is unacceptable – agreed. However, regarding this particular incident, the blame in not on Nigeria. We may only draw lessons from it to strengthen our security systems because we never know when the chicken will come home to roost. />
