Much Ado About Failed State |

Any avid observer of the media would have noticed the emergence of a new popular phrase, ‘failed State’ being sang all over the place particularly by politicians. However, the ‘euphoria’ generated by that ‘American Magic’ barely lasted a few weeks before fizzling out of national discuss. Lest we forget, this was the year 2000 and no elections were in sight as the country just emerged from one. Now, the case is different – hardly any member of the political opposition would end his speech or remarks without inserting that sacred phrase, ‘failed State’. One begins to wonder who these complainants are warning and what really are their objectives?

Alas! Somebody has finally taken responsibility. Many Nigerians are familiar with the daily programme on AIT, “Focus on Nigeria”, anchored by the erudite but controversial journalist, Gbenga Aruleba – don’t know him? He was the guy that once made NEWS when he was arrested by the SSS in 2006 under the Obasanjo regime over perceived offensive programme. Well as it has turned out, the SSS did Aruleba much good by that very arrest, as it eventually brought him into prominence and apparently made him the beautiful bride of many rich people who had an issue to grind on air.

For a nation with immense crude oil and natural gas reserves, it is only logical that people demand access to affordable fuel and fuel products, which are readily available. Accordingly, deregulation of the oil and gas sector is a necessary and key factor to the development of a functional outlet that could refine crude oil and also ensure that refined products are available all year round.

While I sympathize with Mallam Nasiru EL-RUFAI and Nuhu RIBADU over the controversies that trailed the reported non-renewal of their passports, I am equally amused at the reaction of some critics of President YAR’ADUA who accuse him of hypocrisy over the purported denial of Consular services to the duo.
